BURWOOD MURDER
TAXI-DRIVER ARRESTED
FORMAL CHARGE AND REMAND

CHKISTCHTJRCH, This Day. Charles ■William Boakes, a taxidriver, was arrested this morning and charged with the murder of Ellen Gwendoline Scarff on 15th June.
Boakes is a married man with two children, and has been employed by a city firm for some time. It is'understood that he at one stage worked for "Vyalter Scarff, the father of the dead girl. He was interviewed at length by detectives a day or two after the discovery.
Boakes appeared in the Magistrate's Court to-day, and was charged with the murder of Gwendoline Scarff, and that on 19th May, 1927, he unlawfully supplied a noxLus thing . . to the girl, knowing the same was intended to be unlawfully used, -v It was stated that Boakes 'g age was 37, and that he was-born in New Zealand. ■
He was remanded to 4th August on the application of the Crown Prosecutor.
The murder of Gwendoline.Scarff was committed at a lone spot in the overgrown sandhill region of Burwood, one of the seaside suburbs of Christchurch. The dead girl was found with wounds in the head, and a heavy spanner discovered in the neighbourhood was supposed to have been used by her aßsailant. The case has been remarkable for the absence of ascertainable facts relating to the girl's movements on the day prior to the tragedy.
