MINE WORKS DISAPPEAR

Heralded by rumblings and explosions at the pithead, tho works, including the cage shaft, of the Auguste Victoria mine, Huls, disappeared into a crater 220 yards doep, which rapidly spread over a wide area. Houses for a radius of a mile were evacuated.
The majority of the workers had sufficient warning to escape. Frantic efforts are being made to rescue five men entombed.
The accident was due to an inrush of water into the shaft.
