Police cases at the Magistrate's Court to-day were dealt with by Mr. E. Page, S.M.

A clerk, aged ]", who appeared on remand on a charge of having attempted to commit suicide at Lower Hutt, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence, if called upon, within twelve months, and was also ordered to abstain from intoxicating liquor during that period. Mr. P. J. O'Kegan's application for the suppression of the accused's name was successful.

"I plead not guilty." said John Marshall, a labourer, aged 60, when he was charged with being idle and disorderly with insufficient lawful moans of support. "He pleaded guilty yesterday and was remanded to to-day for sentence," explained Sub-Inspector Harvey to tha Bench. "Yes. but I plead not guilty to-day," returned the accused. The Sub-Inspector: "I don't think he is quite normal, your Worship." Mr. Page: "It is difficult to know what to do with' him, as he appears to be subnormal. The only suitable institution appears to be the gaol, and I propose to send him there. He will be sentenced to three months' imprisonment."

Charged with the theft ot a serge suit and n. raincoat. Hoy William Spencer, a labourer, aged 2S, was remanded to appear on Ist August. Bail was allowed in the sum of £200, with a similar surety.

Two charges of. having committed theft by failing to account to the Wellington Bread Company for £32 17s 8d were admitted by a bread roundsman, Stanley Duncan Weaver, aged 24. Chief-Detective Ward said that the accused's practice was to suppress the accounts given to him by the firm and prepare fresh accounts on different billheads. When arrested, he stated that he had lost a sum of money belonging to the firm in September last, and had been endeavouring to make repayment by the method described. He was ii married man with one child, and had been convicted in 1020 for theft. Mr. Page: ''The accused falsified the accounts to cover his tracks. I do.rt think this is a case for probation." A sentence of two months' imprisonment w.is imposed on each charge, the terms to be concurrent.
