BARGE SINKS

LADEN WITH MACHINERY

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. A barge, heavily laden with machinery to be used in mixing concrete for the construction of a new wharf at Devonport, capsized and sank yesterday afternoon.

The barge was discovered to be leaking early in the day, and heavy seas, together with driving wind and the heavy machinery on board, rendered its condition unsafe. Consequently tho Harbour Board authorities decided to remove the barge to a more sheltered anchorage, but directly the painter was cut the mishap occurred. Tho men on the deck of the barge hastily transhipped to the tug; fortunately no one was injured, although one man had to dive into the water, and was rescued.

No arrangements have yet been made for refloating the barge. In the meanwhile tho construction work on the now wharf will be held up.
