Up to the end of last season his stock had won over £270,000 in New Zealand, in additioa to a large sum in Australia. '. [It is almost safe to say that Martian, has been the greatest staying sire of the Dominion since Musket. Ho was foaled in 1901, being by the English, horso Martagon, from the imported mare Otterden by Shern from Spring Mora by Springfield. Martian was thus in his 27th year, and until about two years ago he retained his vitality and usefulness in an amazing manner. A record, of his best sons and daughters is so lengthy that it cannot be attempted hero. Ho was at the had of the winning sires' list in New Zealand for eight consecutive seasons. Probably us a sire of out-and-out stayers he has earned the greatest reputation, tho well preserved Rapine by his exploits this season being a worthy representative. Amongst tho best of his sons and daughters no doubt was Sasanof, winner of tho Melbourne Cup, New Zealand Cup, and Stead Gold Cup. Danube, Warstep, Ardenvhor, Mascot, Menelaus, and Royal Star all won good long distance handicaps for him in New Zealand, while in Australia The Hawk won all kinds of races. Other good winners were The Cypher, Reputation, Cherubini, and Rossini. Star Stranger only last spring captured the Metropolitan at Randwick, and Naos was unlucky enough to bo beaten into second place in the Melbourne Cup and Australiau Cup this season. Martian had a short career on tho Turf, but he showed himself a first-class stayer, winning the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes, North Island Challenge Stakes, Canterbury Cup, and A.J.C. Randwick Plate. In the lastnamed race ho beat Emir, Lord Cardigan, and Abundance.]
