DEARER LEATHER
The Master Tanners and Leather Manufacturers' Association of Sydney has decided that in view of the recent sharp and sustained advance in the price of hides, an immediate and substantial advance is imperative in the prices of all leathers. The proposed rise was 12}£ per cent, on lists. The advance in values for a large proportion of hides was said to be fully 50 per cent. Demand bad come from oversea buyers, particularly American tanners. Australian tanners had to pay advanced rates, or go without. In many cases, considerably reduced inputs of hides by tanners had taken place, but this had afforded no relief, so strong had been the export demand. The same conditions obtained in other markets of the Commonwealth, and already the tanners in the various States had taken action in the direction of raising their leather prices.
