SPEED BOAT BURNT

BENZINE EXPLOSION

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. The speed-boat Miss X, owned by Mr. Is. M. Hoyes (of Remuera) was destroyed by fire off the Orakei Wharf shortly after 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. There were two men in the boat at the time, Mr.W. Turner (chief mechanic at Hoyes Motor, Ltd.), and another mechanic. They were drifting from the wharf when suddenly an explosion occurred, and flames quickly enveloped the craft. The men dived over the side and swam to the wharf. The fire had such a strong hold that nothing could be done to suppress the flames. The men said they had been filling the benzine tank when the explosion occurred. They suffered no injury. What remained of the launch, was towed to the shore.

The boat, which was not insured was valued at from £800 to £900. She was one of the fastest of her class on the harbour, and had won many prizes. Lately she had been placed on the' scratch mark on the last occasion. The launch caught fire when competing in the Auckland provincial championship for the Walker-Hall Cup.
