UNSTEADY BAROMETER

UNPROMISING, OUTLOOK

Fair, though cold, weather has ruled in the west coast and southernmost districts of the South Island, but in the North Island a cyclonic disturbance has held sway. The barometer rose on Saturday, but fell again for another disturbance, and there was only a temporary improvement in conditions yesterday. At "Wellington one point of rain was registered this morning, while yesterday 26 points were recorded. This morning 3.lin. were registered at Ruatoria, and 2.04 in. at Mangonui. A report received from Kawa Kawa stated that the river thero was in high flood, and that 3in. of rain had .fallen. Strong south-easterly winds have predominated, and heavy rain ..has fallen in tho "northern and east coast districts, especially in the North Island. The barometer is high in the south, Christchurch to-day having a reading of 30.42.

The forecast is for south-easterly winds, strong to gale, and veering to westerlies northward of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura. Easterlies, moderate to strong, may be expected elsewhere, but they are likely to increase and back to northerlies for another westerly disturbance, which is due in about 48 hours. In the meantime the barometer is unsteady, with a rising' tendency, particularly in the north. Heavy seas are to be expected . northward of Kaikoura and Cook Strait, rough southward, and considerable elsewhere. Boisterous weather is predicted, with heavy rain and rivers rising in the North Island and north-east districts of the South Island. Conditions will be cold and changeable elsewhere, with showers along the east coast of the . South Island. Further snow may be expected on' the higher levels.
