SHANGHAI, 17th June,
Eeports that the tide of battle is continuing unfavourable to the northerners, and a declaration by Chang Tsolin that he cannot guarantee the safety of Japanese, has resulted in 1500 addi-jtv?na*Japanese^-troops being despatch- ?". *° Tsinani Reinforcements from the Sasebo naval 'base »re also mobilising. As a result of the threatening situation. Hankow is being .gradually surrounded by adherents of Chiang KaiShek, with the object, it is believed, 'of ousting the Beds. A majority of the Hankow forces is now returning from the Honan province to defend the eeatof the Borodin Government, Feng Yu-bsiang is assuming control ■of top evacuated.territory. There have been frequent clashes between soldiers and police at Hankow. Typhus has broken out among the wounded, who refuse to be quarantined.
