PALMERSTON SHOW

MOST SUCCESSFUL DAY

JUDGES' REMARKS

(By Telegraph.) (From Onr Special Keporwtu)

PALMEKSTON NORTH, loth June.

The second day of the Winter Show of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association will go down as one of the most successful in the history of that: body. Palmerston North observed a half-holiday, and with the weather ideal a large crowd visited the showground. There they found much to entertain;them, the main feature .being the annual Kugby match between Tc Ante. Maori College and the Palmerston North" High School. The industrial and produce halls were well patronised by interested sightseers. The side shows, which experienced a rather lean time on the opening day,' did better business to-day. There was another largo crowd at the show to-night.' A. remarkably find ; showing in the fat sheep section made the task of, the ( judge, Mr.F. H. Steele, of Christchurch, a difficult one. "In all my experience I have never seen such a good class at any show or at any season," ho remarked. "All the sheep were good and of uniform quality, the two-tooths being as good a lot as you would find anywhere. Some of the lambs were especially; 'fine. AH the exhibits were in excellent condition, and it was a pleasure to me to judge them, although they did not give an easy task to select the •prize-winners." : Begarding the fat cattle division, Mr. Steelo said that the entries even for a winter show wero not up to the usual standard, and the exhibits were not impressive. The placing of, cows and heifers with steers was a noticeable; feature of which he did not approve, and he thought steps .should be taken to remedy the matter at the next. show. Tho majority of' prizes in the sheep and lambs' section were won by the well-known exhibitor Sir J. G. Wilson, of Ngaio Station (Bulls). This competitor was awarded the champion medal for tho best pen of three sheep under 24 months, and in addition; he secured: six first and four, seconds. Others who secured firsts were Farley Brothers' (Wanganui), S. F. M'Kielvie (Kongotea), and L. B. Wall (Palmerston North). Seconds were awarded to W. A. Thomson (Palmerston North) and J. F. M'Kolyie. The results of fat cattle classes were ag follows:—Heifer (un der four years), J. Webb (Taihape), first and second. Bullocks (under three years),* G. T. Keeble: (Palmorston North), first and second! Bullock (under two years), J. Webb, first. Fat cow (any age), J. Webb, first and second. Best pair of butchers' cattle (not over fbur years), C. T. Keeble first, J. Webb second. THE POULTRY SHOW. The poultry show, which is always a, big feature of Palmerston North's winter carnival, opened to-day and with large entries in all sections. The judges had a busy day. They tackled their job expeditiouslyj however, and judging was completed soon after noon. Mr Anderson, the judge of tho game section, expressed, the view that as a whole the game birds .were tho best yet exhibited in Palmerston North. The best class was the spangled cocks,, the champion bird being a.particularly fine specimen. Mr S/ Johnson, the judge in the other fancy section, expressed disappointment with the, Minorcas f which were a poor lot. There were some nice birds, howover, in the American White Leghorn class: /Mr J. Nixon, the judge in tho ut'U^c'assps, was particularly imprcssod with'ttifc quality of the birds shown, romarking that they exceeded anything at Palmerston North before, both as regards quantity and quality. There was little competition in tho pheasant; turkey and geese, classes. FOOTBALL MATCH. Tho public wero entertained this afternoon by football matches in tho ring. The main attraction was the annual match between To Auto Maori College and Palmerston North High School. •Both teams gave a bright exhibition of •"Ugbyj opening up the play in fine style. During the first spell the Palmorston team' held the advantage, and finished, up with a lead of six points, Seymour and Brydon getting across to score good tries. Tho attempts at conversion failed. In tho second spell To Auto showed to better advantage, but were unablo to' overhaul their opponents' tally, although they came near to doing so. Thompson got across to score a., try -which was converted by Whitcliff c.. Tho game ended: Palmerston North 6 points, To Auto 5. In tho curtain-raiser tho Manawatu B soccer representatives met a team from Flock House. Tho game, which was far from a good exhibition of the code, ended in a win for Flock Houso by one goal to nil, Goodall piercing the Manawatu defence.
