FILM CENSOR

POPULAR VACANCY

500 APPLICATIONS

.An extraordinary number of applications has been received .for'the vacant position of censor . of cinematograph iilms and film posters,,which was advertised recently throughout the Dominion, and a long process of elimination will have to be adopted to enable the final selection to be made.

The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. E. P. Bollard) stated to-day that there were about 500 applications for the office, and these were being prepared for scrutiny and consideration. He proposed to reduce the number to about a dozen,, and then submit the final names,to Cabinet'for the final selection to' be made.

It is understood thnt "a number of applications have been received from outside the Dominion.

Pending the filling of the position, Mr. W. C. Tanner, who has acted for some time as assistant to Mr. Jolliffe, the late film censor, is acting as censor. The work is still being carried out in the cramped quarters in Sydney street, but it is expected that as soon as tho new appointment is made the newlyprepared premises at the old Public Works workshops building close by will be occupied. Facilities will also be provided there for the inspection of film posters,: as required by the legislation passed last year.
