MAKING OF POPPIES
At the annual conference of the New Zealand E.S.A. this morning some discussion took place on a remit from the Christehurch B.S.A.:—"That it be a recommendation that an endeavour be made to go. into the matter- of finding' some method of manufacturing poppies m New Zealand by returned soldiers at a lower cost than the present." . The object of the; remit was stated to be to' find employment for ex-sol-diers. The sub-committee on the unemployment remits, however, reported that it considered this remit impractic able/and recommended that it be deleted.
Mr. ,T. D. Harper (Dominion treasurer) stated that the B.S.A. used only 150,000 poppies per ye.ar,. and paid for them 1-Jd each. That meant only some £000 to £700, and what employment would-such a sum "afford? Besides, he did not think for a moment that the poppies could be made here at ljd apiece. ' .
