SAILORS' REST SOCIETY
ANNUAL MEETING-
The'rfnmial meeting of the Sailors' Rest Society was held last evening, Mr. J. Rollct presiding over a large attendance. In commenting on the year's activities, the chairman said that the society, had experienced a most successful season. Ho hoped, however, that the coming twelve months would. show a further improvement, especially in the number of visits paid by members to ships in port. 2'he men who lived in the forecastle, particularly the married men with children, thought—and they had a right to think —that they were not being as well treated as they should be. The society existed not to cause unrest among these men, though it appreciated their position, but to do as much as it could to help them, and I to make their lot an easier one. The balance-sheet, which was read and adopted, showed that tho receipts during the year wera £275 8s 2d, and expenditure £253 15s 9d, leaving a credit balance of £21 12s sd. Tho election of officers resulted as fol-lows:—-President, Mr. C. J. Mackay; vicepresident, Mr. E. Fairburn; - secretary, Mr. K. Purchase; treasurer, Mr. J. King; board, Mesdames Rollet and l'airburn, Misses Whiteside, Sunley, arid Armstrong, Captain Gifford, and Messrs. C. J. Drake J. Rollet, J. Gifford, R. Stevens, J. Woods, T. Baume, G-. Ardrey, J. Broadbent, and P. Wilson.
