TYPOGRAPHICAL DISPUTE

BEFORE ARBITRATION COURT

The typographical dispute, in which a. partial agreement was arrived at before the Conciliation Council recently, was considered by the Arbitration Court to-day. Mr. Justice Frazer was on the bench, and associated with him were Messrs. W. Scott and A. L. Monteith. . ■ '

Mr. B. L. Hammond appeared for the employers, and Mr. C. H. Chapman for the employees.

Mr. Chapman, addressing the Court, pointed out that an agreement had been arrived at so far as the hand section was concerned. The. matters which remained to be settled by the Court were those connected with the wages of machine compositors, including linotype and monotype machine operators. Mr. Chapman stated'that the wages ruling in Australia were higher than those paid in New Zealand. An operator, to bo successful, had to possess certain special qualifications, such as a good education, a possession of a general knowledge far above the ordinary, intelligence of. .a..high, standard, good sight and hearing, and a suitable temperament.
