The Director of the Horticulture Division has received the reports from tl;« fruit inspectors o . the condition, of local-ly-grown fruit and vegetables in shops and auction rooms, and the market conditions for the month of .May. with reference to" Wellington district. A large percentage of the apples coming on the market were of low-grade quality, and the price of better-quality fruit was thereby affected. Pears were in steady supply, and of medium quality. Potatoes were plentiful, in fact, at times in over-supply of Southern Dakotas End Whites. Whilst there have been many first-class lines offering there has been a fair amount of blight, particularly in the ■whites. Tomatoes steady, supply, quality good; a good proportion of second quality offering, which is usual as the season advances.. Both root and green vegetables have been in steady supply, during the month until the third week, when increased supplies came to hand, which resulted in easier prices.
