MURCHISON OIL COMPANY.

Samples of mud were recently taken from the Murchison Oil Company's bore at 2050 feet and 2100 feet. These were submitted to Mr. A. J. Parker for analysis, states the "New Zealand Herald," and he reports that in the first sample oil was.present to the extent of 30 fluid ounces per ton and that from the second simple brown oil was extracted, which upon an. alysis proved to be a mineral petroleum oil. Mr. Spencer, the company's geologist, reports on the matter .'as follows:-—

"The presence of petroleum in the bore afc 2100 feet may be regarded -as a distinctly encouraging sign, particularly as it occurs among typical-.oil-bearing strata, such as limey mud stones. The oil analysed has found its way, in conjunction with gas* from the lower tertiary beds, but botli have been unable to penetrate further upwards through the practically iinpcDrious capping. The gas has bccoino. jmOP. ami the oil dormant.. Keeping steadily in view the favourable nature of the formations passed through during the.whole of the drilling operations, together with, tho intermittent seams of oil and gas met with, it is recommended that the company continue drilling imtij t!ic lr,~ir tertiary beds are pierced, when the main oil horizon will probably be found."
