DAIRY CONTROL

VACANCIES IN BOARD

KEEN INTEREST IN BALLOT

The postal ballot now proceeding in connection with the election of three members to fill vacancies on the Dairy Produce Export Control Board is exciting a large amount of interest amongst those who are qualified to vote. The ballot has been in progress for about a fortnight, voting papers having been forwarded by the Department of Agriculture to enfranchised suppliers of milk and cream to exporting dairy factories; polling will close at noon on 15th June. A large number of voting papers have been returned already, and it is apparent from the activities of the committees working for the respective candidates in the three wards affected that there is bound to be a keen contest in each district.'Following upon the increased interest created in the subject of control by the recent developments on the London market, a large poll is anticipated. In No. 3 (Waikato and district) ward there are almost 5000 qualified voters; in No. 4 ward (Taranaki district), about 3750 voters; and in No. 7 ward (Westland, Marlborough, Ellesmere, etc.), about G9OO voters. The interest that is being evinced in the election is also obvious from the number of inquiriel the/returning officer is receiving in regard to voting qualifications, from the number of complaints of non-receipt of voting papers, and from the general anxiety to ensure that names are on the roll. The rolls have been compiled by the Department of Agriculture from lists of names and addresses of suppliers furnished by dairy factories manufacturing butter and cheese for export, and it seems that in many eases secretaries of cooperative concerns have not been strictly accurate in compiling their lists or bringing them right up to date. The Department, of course, cannot be held responsible for such omissions, but is making due* investigation into cases where suppliers complain that they have not received ballot papers.
