AT OTAKI

SHINING ARMOUR WINS

RAUKAWA CUP

HUIA HANDICAP TO ROYAL

GAME

(By Telegraph.) > (Special to "The Evening Post.")

, rl OTAKI, 3rd June. Inere was a great, attendance for the opening day of the Otaki Racing Club's Meeting, and the totalisator did brisk business; m fact,.the facilities for betting were overtaxed, and the increase should fV<i£r e ™greatel; than ib was- The sum Jw 'm .T as handled > •« increase of £646 over that for the first day last year. .' ■. • Looking well, Kalakaua had a big following for the Tararua Hurdles. He was never gomg really well, and although he finished a close third he ras run better races. Lady Passenger ran a good race throughout, and was always going like a winner. Gauntlet went much better than iie has for a considerable time, while Alario must have dove better had he not almost fallen opposite the stauds. For such an event, the Kukir Maiden held was a particularly good one. Backers were right in their judgment, as the placed horses were supported as they finished. The winner, Avro, impressed all wlio witnessed his good showing at Wanganm. He only beat Royal Picture today, but as ho gave the English-bred horse several lengths' start over the last two furlongs, the performance was good Barry tried to win nil the way on-Royal Picture and he. only went under in the last few strides. • Romantic repeated his good form of Wanganui by finishing a close third, and the two-year-old Lady Limond did well to run a good fourth on such, a holding track. Catkin was one ot the unlucky ones, as after getting away badly he ran close up to the placed division. ■

Looking better than usual, the Taranakiowned ; Toapaiti was installed a biir favourite for the Waitohu Hack, but at no stage of the race had he a chance. The winner, Lady Cynthia, ran her best race, as after being well placed throughout, she drew out fionr her opponents in the final stages to win nicely. Carrigallen showed his usual speed in the first purt of the race, but did not finish too generously. Shining Armour was a ball of muscle when he went out to contest the Ruakawa Cup. His trainer's confidence was well founded, as Shining Armour led practically throughout to win easily. Diogenes ran n good solid race, and it was only in the last stride Tresham beat him for second honours. Tresham was badly placed over the last thee furlongs, but finished at a great rate. Merry Damon was \anofchei- not well served in the running, and did well to finish fourth. Rouex ran a good race to the home turn, but then weakened, and this also applies to Lady Anstruther.

Despite recent failures Rowley was installed a pronounced favourite for the Otaki Hack Handicap. Ho was favoured with the services-of L. Morris, but after being well placed at the straight entrance he again failed at the critical stage. As on many former occasions, Radiate put in a great run over the last two furlongs, but this time the feat landed him a winner. The runner-up, Closefire, waj called on to make up a dozen lengths over" the lact half-mile, and did well to finish second. Mountain Jean ran an honest race, and Merle may do better later. Consequent on-vhis excellent races at the late Wanganur meeting, Bonogne was a big favourite for the Huia Handicap, but he ran one of his characteristic bad races, and gave his backers a poor run. Royal Game was neglected in the betting, but going to the front early he scored in a decisive manner. Deluge ran a good race, while Ladyfingers and Kilperon did well. The last-named finished very fast, and appeared to be a trifle unlucky.

Romantic made his second appearance during the afternoon, when he went out for the Te Horo Hack. He did not get anything the best of the start, but soon raced to the lead, only to be caught in the last few strides by the uncertain Mister Gamp, • who put in a remarkable run to win. Highway, with L. Morris in the saddle, finished fast in fourth place, and ia well just now.

CONCLUDING EVENT.

-'Lieutenant Bill was left at the start of tl:.o j Otaki Handicap, Paitonu leading Twink, Hernia, Vexatious, and Rowley past the stand. Racing up the back, Paitonu was in front from } Twink, Henna, Vexatious, Sir Moment, Rowley, Mountain Jean, and Merle. At tlie half-mile post, Paitonu just led Henna and Twiuk with Mountain Jeau, Vexatious, Sir Moment, and Rowley next. Merle and Closefii"e coming fast. Racing into, the straight, Henna and Paitonu were just in front of Mountain Jean, Twink, and Closefire. When well in the straight, Henna drew clear, but over the last few chains was challenged by several other runners, Radiate, wide out, finishing best to win by two and a half lengths from Closefire, who also finished well to beat Mountain Jean on the post for second place. Sir Moment was a couple of lengths further back, fourth, just in front of Henna, then followed Rowley and Merle.

The start of the Huia Handicap was a fair one, although Papaponga dwelt and lost ground. Mireusonta was first 'out, followed by Deluge, Popoff, and Kaiti. At the end of a furlong, Royal Game was ia front from Bevis, Deluge, Lady Fingern, Mireusonta, and Popoff.
