AT WINGATUI

RANUI WINS WINGATU! STEPLECHASE

PROVINCIAL HANDICAP TO

CIRCULATION

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

DUNEDIN, 3rd May

The Dunedin Winter Meeting co>. „-d in fine weather, and the- attendance appeared to be a record for the course. Tho track was again sticky and holding. The totalisator handled £35,988 10s for the day compared with £34,647 for the second day last year. ■ ■ „ . SILVERSTREAM HANDICAP. Lady Tractor went out a better favourite than Paris in the Silverstream Handicap, but the former was never sighted, whilst Paris ran a good race. Stratlmaver and King Balboa were responsible for the early running, and. they were closely attended by Piton, Jarretiere, and Beaming, whilst Brightling, who had been first to show tip gradually dropped away. When fairly in line for home Stratlmaver and King Balboa were joined by Paris, who, however, got blocked on the rails. A good finish saw Strathnayer stay on better than King Balboa and beat him a head, whilst Paris was the same distance away. Paris : was a bit unlucky. Piton, Chivalry, and ! Fairy Tidings i followed the placed lot Fairy Tidings did well to finish so close up as she was slow to begin and ran fully half a dozen lengths behind the rest of the field at the end of the first furlong.

PROVINCIAL HANDICAP.

Circulation went out favourite in a good' betting raee_ in the Provincial Handicap, i but Set Sail again carried comparatively little support. She, however, made a better• diow # than in the Birthday Handicap, and carried on the early running with Courtly Rose and Circulation, who was closely attended by the rest of the field. Anything appeared to have a chance four, furlongs from homf, but inside the three furlong post Circulation, who was always running well, shot to the front, and coming along won full of running to make a one-horse finish. Pull Swing stayed on best of the others, but failed to get within less than four lengths of the winner, whilst Courtly Rose finished three lengths away, and well in front of Vaward. Set Sail went well for about a mile, but then'faded away and finished last. Circulation was in tho Birthday Handicap, and judging by the manner in which the > daughter of Paper Money galloped away from the opposition in the Provincial Handicap must have held an excellent show if sent to the post.

OTAGO HURDLES.

Bonena's display in the Trial Hurdles resulted in his being, elected favourite in the Otago Hurdles, in which he started a better favourite than Wharncliffe and Atapo. Bonatic and Bonomel made the early running from Captain Sarto, Dubious, Atapo, Coastguard, and Bonena. After going a mile Coastguard then took charge, and thereafter gave nothing a chance, as ho established a four or five-longths' lead and kept cloar in the run home. Wharncliffe drew-up towards the finish and beat Kaikahu for second place, but ,had no chance with the winner. Bonenu put in somo bad jumps and so settled what would otherwise have been a good chance. It is a fact that he did not hurdle so well with Ruthven as he did with Dawson up on the first day. Bonatic, Bonomel, Atapo, Captain Sarto, and Dubious all tired after going a mile and a half, and Penury Rose wail tailed off right through the piece.

WAIRONGOA HANDICAP.

,_ Boy went out a good favourite for thi) Wairongoa Handicap, but after being nrat to break the lino lost his place, and a usually good beginner in Lava was last to leave, with Cassolette. Arrowmir'soon drew well clear of Clontarf, Sotferite, Nincompoop, and Paper Boy, whilst Cassolette ran up to the leaders. Arrowmir increased his lead and landed in the straight half a dozen lengths clear, and he finally won by that margin from Overhaul, who from the last three furlongs from home, stayed on well ,and beat Clontarf by a short length. Nincompoop was fourth, and Paper Boy next.

Paper Boy once again got a bad run and ran on the outside of three horses up to the straight. Arrowmir has been galloping well on the track, but nevertheless was allowed to pay a good dividend.

WINGATUI STEEPLECHASE.

Blue Hall weut out a better favourite than Eanui and Pamplona in the Wiugatui Steeplechase. Birkenella bumped his rider oft' at the second leg of the double, which formed the third jump, and after going a circuit Blue Hall fell and brought down Mettledrilt. Ranui made most"of the early running, with Vice Grand, Kinling, and Pamplona in fairly close attendance. Tigerland was also well up, but lost ground through bad jumping. Frisco Mail was also dwelling at his fences, and Adjutor did not go so well as he did iv the early stages of the Otago Steeples. Ranui led along the back, where Pamplona was commencing to tire. Eanui led over the water jump, and was still showing the way to the last fence to Kipling, Vice Grand, Pamplona, and Frisco Mail, who had made up a lot of ground. Ramii, .Kipling, and Vice Grand landed iv close order over the last fence, and in a good finish Ranui stalled off Kipling and beat him by a neck. Vice Gland finished five lengths away,, and Frisco Mail a similar distance further back, followed by Pamplona and. Adjutor.

JANEFIELD HANDICAP,

ltoyal Saxon was slow to begin, and Craiginore also dwelt at the rise of the barrier m the Janefield Handicap. Erin go Bragh made the pace from Irish, Motor Smash, Royal Head, and Schottische, and showed the way into the straight The leader commenced to tire at the distance, and Irish ran home a fairly comfortable winner, a length in front of Royal Head, who drew up. and beat Erin go Bragh over a length. Schottische was next, followed by Craigmore and Royal Saxon. The last named is a better horse than he showed m the race, and Craigmore is a likely sort.

FORBURY STEEPLES.

Maungainoe was elected a good favourite for the Forbury, Steeples, and ran a good race, but had no chance of beating Isla Bank, who showed improved form, and after taking charge in the back stretch won comfortably aif the finish. Radiae shaped promisingly and should make a useful horse over fences with more experience. Andy Hn a fair race and pulled up better than he did' on the first day. Caskinaii was a -well-beaten horse when he came down at the water jump. He was always one of the leaders until he commenced to fee five- furlongs from home. Jovial made

a bold show by piloting the field for about a mile, but than dropped right out of it.

INVERMAY HANDICAP. Tlie card concluded with a good betting race on the :[nvermay Handicap. Good support came itor Ophir, Soltoe, The Harp, i\ing Sol, Lucy Locket, and Doleful Ditty. Iheygot away from a good line and Luev Locket, Roman Archer, Fairy Herald, and J.ho Harp formed the leading bunch over the first couple of furlongs. Fairy Herald joined Lucy Locket and Roman Archer at the six furlong post, and taking charge at the far turn came clean away aud won easily by a good three lengths from Doleful Ditty, who stayed on well and beat feoltoe by four lengths for second place. The Harp, Carnot, and Ophir were next past the post. Fairy Herald is v good actor in the mud, and scored one of the easiest -wins of the meeting.
