MANAWATU TOURNEYS

4 .PALMERSTON N., This Day, One could not have wished for a mor» ideal hockey day than yesterday, wheir the Manawatu Men's and Ladies' Associations held their annual five-a-sMe and seven-a-side tourneys. A brilliant suk shone from an almost cloudless sky, and there were- more .spectators- than could fill the spacious grandstand; Interest in the games never "lagged throughout the day although, as''was to be expected, enthusiasm considerably increased with the section &naia and reached fever heat with thejfiiials. The victorious ladies ';team was! the' Dannevirke Old Girls A, who contested the final with Ramblers, another Dannevirke team. The-.match wag 8} particularly fast one, too fast in fact, for the players were tired after manysectional games. It was ' not to be wondered at, therefore, that three of the girls—Misses Greenwood;' BT. 'JTore-; man, and L. Bell—were each tempbrarity overcome and the game had- to be stopped to enable them to recover; -Dannevirke Old Girls won by 3 to nil; the scorers being Misses Greenwood"'(2) 'and Simpson- (1).

• Fast as the ladies' match, was, th» men's final between Phoenix-A ■ and Kiwi A (Dannevirke) which followed, proved doubly strenuous, and so evenly were the two teams matched that no less than four-spells had to bo played before a decision was reached, and then the winning stroke was a "behind" registered for the. Palmerston 1 North team by Lundy. Excitement amongst the spectators worked to a high pitch, and eheer^greeted the Phoenix player's. victoriouSshot, ■ especially as he had to beat two opponents to Succeed. .
