ALMOST A SUBMARINE

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") '"' AUCKLAND, Ist June. Knud William Larsen, scowmaster, was charged to-day with going to sea with the upper edge of the load-line of the scow Rahiri submerged when loaded. Counsel for the defendant stated that the pumps got out of order, causing the cargo of sand to become wet. The Marino Department's prosecutor described the case as a glaring one. The vessel's freeboard was only an inch and a half. When the correct load (on 20 tons register) was carried, the scow had a bad list to starboard, and the overloading meant that seven inches of the deck was awash. The Magistrate (Mr. M'Kean): "It's a submarine, not a scow." As the Department admitted that the pumps had gone wrong, Larsen was fined £4 and costs, instead of the maximum of £50.
