MOTOR APPRENTICES

TECHNICAL CLASS OPENED The motor apprenticer class was officially opened at the Wellington Technical College last evening. There were present: Messrs. J. H. Howell (director), A. Black (secretary ■ of the Motor Engineering Apprentices' Committee), Broun, H. Dore, A. Bruce, and V. Calder (instructor). About 32 apprentices were present. Mr. Black stated that, the class was compulsory. He said that employers had agreed in the event of the boys attending 75 per cent, of the classes to refund their fees. Should the student pass his examination, he would be entitled to his increase of 5s a week, iv addition to the ordinary increase laid down by the award. Mr.' Black stated that he had received letters from several firms congratulating the committee on its activities. He said the motor industry offered many opportunities to competent tradesmen. In referring to a reecnt speech made by the Minister of Education in regard to technical training. Mr. Howell said he thought it would be difficult to convince anyone that the earnest students could be better employed than they were at present in endeavouring to improve their j qualifications for their jobs. He urged the students to take pride in the institute to which they belonged. Messrs. Brown and Calder also addressed the students.
