MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Polite cases in the Magistrate's Court today were dealt with by Mr. E. Page, S.M. With a long list of previous convictions, Frederick Taylor, alias Arthur Thompson, alias Wilson, a labourer, aged 46, was found guilty of being an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient lawful menus of support. He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. ( A similar sentence was imposed on Thomas Yates, a labourer, aged 52 (Mr. B. J. Dolan), who admitted stealing a fountain pen and a watch, worth £3 12s 6d, the property of George Glendining. . The articles were taken from an hotel in Waitara and were disposed of by the accused. Yates has eighteen previous convictions, most of them for theft. Henry Frederick Couvain, a fireman, aged 2S, who deserted from the Corinthic at Wellington, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. The Magistrate ordered that he be placed on board the ship before it sails. Couvain's wife, it was stated, was in England, and needed maintenance for herself and her three children. One first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s, the amount of his bail.
