LISTENERS' LEAGUE

A CHRISTCHUECH MOVE

(By Teligraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHBISTCHTJBCH, This: Day. The formation of a Listeners' League to watch the interests of radio enthusiasts was approved by a largely attended meeting ,of those interested last night. "It is felt, I am told by a number of people in Christchurch, that the time has come for the formation of an association or league of this kind," said the Mayor, Mr. J.-K. Archer, who i presided. "You all know that we have a Broadcasting Company here that looks after that side of the business, and it is now felt that there should be some organisation* to look after the. interests of those who have to do with the other side." I Mr. K. M. Gressbn, who with Mr. -D. C. Cossgrove convened the meeting, said that he thought the attendance that night was sufficient evidence that the time was: ripe for the formation of a league to further the interests of tW listeners and generally keep them banded together. There were three classes of listeners: those interested in the making and selling of sets, whose interest was commercial, those who made a study of radio, and the vast body of listeners who listened in for the fun of it. It was only right, he thought, that this last class,-which was a very large one, should .have ' some sort of organisation through which it might be heard by those who controlled broadcasting. If there was 'a society that could reconcile 'the conflicting desires of listeners and generally promote their interests, it would be a good thing. Anything in the nature of criticism, he said, would be biit,of place at that meeting. Did they want a league to improve matters! .That waß" the question. He moved: "That this meeting approves of the formation of a Listeners' League.", . . : Mr. H. B. Alleway said that branches, might be fo;-med in various centres. It was imposisble to please everyone, but if they learned'the wishes of the majority and had the Broadcasting Company fallen, in with these.wishes with regard to programmes, they ,would be fulfilling a useful mission. Mr. L. Slade said that he had been delegated by the Radio Society of Christchurch to attend the' meeting on their behalf, and to,offer the assistance t>t the society. • Mr. G-resson's motion was carried.
