IMPROVEMENT LIKELY LATER

Strong nnd cold southerly winds have ruled, and rain has fallen generally. Snow was reported on the higher levels this morning, and rivers were high in many parts of th,o country. The general distribution of pressure shows a "low" about Capo Egmont still, but tho barometer is high in tho South. "Information ■ from a ship at sea westward of Cape Eguiont would bo very useful to-day,'' said the Dominion Meteorologist (Mr. D. G. Bates), "but there is nothing to hand, however." Mr. Bates surmises that tho disturbance in the particular part is now decreasing, and that tho barometer will show a rising tendency. Moderate to strong and squally southerly winds aro forecasted northward of New Plymouth and Napier, and southeasterlies elsewhere. Cold and showery conditions will continuo for a short time in the north and in the northeastern districts of the South Island, with cold and changeable conditions in other 'parts. Another very cold night is to be expected, with hard frosts in

tho South, after which the weather, as slated yesterday, should improve.
