DEPARTMENT REORGANISED

The Government Meteorological .Office has recently been reorganised, and Dr. K. Kidston, who is to assume the duties of Director, will arrive to take charge in August. The present head of the organisation, Mr. D. C. Bates, has been seconded for the work of compiling and publishing annually in complete form all official records, including those taken at local stations, of New Zealand cKmatic conditions. This work will be of great value in determining frost periods, hydrological data, crop forecasts, evaporation and irrigation problems, and the utilisation of wate* power resources. Mr. Bates will receive his present salary, and will be known as Government Climatologist.
