RIVER SCOURING

NEW INVENTION TO BE USED

(By T«l«traph.)

(SMeial t» "Th.t Evening Post.")

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The petrol electric river sweeper which is to scour the silt from the bed of the Avon, is expected to arrive 'in Christchurch from Dunedin to-day. There has been considerable delay on the part of the inventor, Mr. J. F. Stewart, in its delivery, but for some weeks past he has been engaged in tests, and certain defects developed which had to be rectified. The big delay at the outset was over the late arrival of the necessary motors from abroad. | The ordering of the sweeper on the part of the board followed a demonI stration by Mr. Stewart on a part of the river where a pontoon was built for the purpose. The idea is that a stream of water, projected with force against the bed of the river, scours away the submerged mud bank and the" silt floats down the stream. " It is intended to make, a start at Fendalton with the sweeper. '■ •■
