THE SUSSEX MATCH

A SPORTING SIDE

TATE AND BOWLEY MISSING

(By "Not' Out.")

: In the 1 match with the sporting Sussex team the New Zcalanders have been set a fair hurdle, but they may be regarded as fortunate in not having to face M. W; Tate, the noted English bowler.' Of Sussex's performances last season it was said that when Tate was absents the bowling generally lacked sting and effectiveness. It is, however, a pity that Tate is not engaged in the present match, as the presence of this fine player would have given the New Zealandera a little more of the experience which the tourists are seeking. Other notable absentees from the Sussex team are K. 8. Duleepsinhji (who headed the batting averages last year), T. Cookj and E> H. Rowley (who was in New Zealand last, season as coach to the Auckland Cricket Association, and who accompanied the, New Zealand team as coach on the 1 .voyage to England), Dulecpsinhji is probably not taking his place in the Sussex eleven until after the Oxford-Cambridge match in July. As stated in "The Post" on Saturday, A. ■T. Holmes, L. Williams, and C. H. Gibson are not in England this season. Except for .Cook, Tate, and Bowley, Susses havV fielded* their best available side, and New: Zealand have done quite well to dispose of the homo team for 316 runs. The tourists may be reasonably expected to make a good reply to this score. -..■-■.

The occasion marks another triumph for. slow-bowler W, E. Merritt, the "find" of last season, ana this further success serves to emphasise the sound judgment of the New, Zealand selectors. H. M. M'Girr is also keeping his end up as a bowler. It is evident from the bowling details that M. Henderson and W. Cunningham are standing down in this match. The other absentee is not stated, but as Dempster has opened with Blunt it is probable that J. E. Mills is receiving a well-earned spell. A. E. E. Gilligan, captain of Sussex, has eight or nine of the regular players for the present match. Hollingdale played only a few matches for Sussex last year, while Capt. Isherwood has played in previous seasons. The Sparks mentioned in the details is no doubt H. Sparks,'who played in several matches for the'county last year. George Cox is a veteran cricketer,^always cunning with bat and ball, A. F. Wensley *a» a disappointment- last year, and J.H. Parks and J. Langridge did not develop as expected. It was considered that Wensley would still realise all his promise as a bowler if he did not try to bowl too fash W. Cornford was the 'keeper, his work behind the sticks being sometimes excellent and sometimes indifferent.

Prior to the commencement of the present season the prospects of Sussex were stated in an English paper as follows:—The Sussex team, that have gaineq such an enviable reputation for thes sporting cricket they played, and for the brilliance of. theix fielding, hope to injprove oh their last season's record, when they made a distinct advance on * 92?- nd *his wat> a» *• »<"« creditable m v;ew of the frequent absence from the side of Arthur Gilligan, the captain, and Maurice Tate—the former owing to his duties aa a memmer t ? f_jhe Selection Committee, and Tateowing to playing in the Test and other repre f entative matches. Gilliean will again lead the side, which will include K. S . Duleepsinhji, a possible future candidate for international hononrs A H. H.,GUligan, Tate, Bowley, Cook, Cornford, Wensley, Paries, La£ gridge, and others, with, the veteran. George Cox, when he Is available
