TWO MEN BEFORE COURT

GISBORNE, This Day. Arthur Owen and Cornelius patterson were charged beforo the Magistrate this morning with alleged breaches of the Gaming Act. Tho former was charged with using his hairdresser’s premises as a common gaming house, and the latter with assisting Owen in the conduct of the business. In addition six charges of frequenting the street for the purposes of betting was preferred against Owen. The accused pleaded not guilty. Inspector Ecclcs stated that the prosecution, was the result of n raid on 7th May. Betting materials were found in the shop and bets would be shown to have taken place. After a short adjournment;- Mr. Wauchope, fgr the defence, said he had had a conference with the inspector, and his client, and an arrangement had been made. He would now plead guilty on behalf of Owen.

When the charge against Patterson was called a plea of guilty was entered also. '

Inspector Eccles asked leave to withdraw the charges of frequenting the street for the purposes of betting. Tho Magistrate fined Oweii the maximum £IOO arid (iosts, arid Patterson £2O and' costs.
