KAIWARRA'S NEEDS
PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE FORMED
The '•Cinderella of Wellington" is a term which for some years past has frequently been applied to the suburb of. Kaiwarra, but judging by the enthusiasm displayed at a well-attended meeting held there last Wednesday evening, strong efforts will be made in the' near future to remove such a stigma. As convener of the meeting, Mr. X W. Barnes dealt at some length with matters affecting the district generally, and referred in particular to the lack of interest shown in the past by residents themselves in matters connected with local needs. It was the duty of every householder to take an interest and to foster a spirit of pride m the district, and he suggested that this could best he done by forming some body which would reflect the views and ideas of residents.
Mr. Barnes's remarks were fully endorsed by a number of other speakers, who, without exception, stressed the necessity for making some definite effort to remove the disabilities at present existing and with this end in view it was unanimously decided to form a Progressive League to look after the district's interests. It was made quite clear that it was not intended the league should be merely an organisation for the framing and presentation of demands, but rather that it should, by intelligent consideration of the various matters brought up, be able to give valuable advice and co-operation to the authorities concerned in local undertakings Ihe election of officers for the new body resulted as follows:—President, Mr R E J'laws; hon. secretary, Mr. J. Lambert-' committee Mesdames R. Bowden, J. Hartnett, L. Hoult, Miss O. Payne, Messrs X W Barnes, A. E. Bowden, R. Cameron, (t. Haws, J. Hartnett, W. Latimer, H layne.
