WELLINGTON CLUB'S MEETING

FIRST DAY AT TRENTHAM

OPENED IN THREATENING,

WEATHER

Lowering clouds and a gloomy sky, with more than a threat of rain, greeted intending racegoers this .morning, but it took more than this to deter patrons of the Wellington Eacing Club. Quite a fair crowd journeyed ont to Trentham considering this is the off meeting and to-day is not a public holiday. Practically no rain has fallen at Trentham, and the track is hard and fast. Commendation established' a record for Australia and New Zealand in the St. Leger, his time, 2min 57isec, being 3-10 sec better than that of Duo, who curiously enough established the previous record in this race in 1921. Commendation had to be ridden cut, but he won well. Although beaten, Hynanna was not disgraced. Following are the details of the , racing up to the time of going to press:— a FIBST HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 300 soys, second horse 60 soys and third 30 soys from the stake: minimum weight 9.0; one mile. .6 H. With half the journey gone, Hokioi was still in' front of Bennanee, Gardant, Thorndale, Asleep, Sayanora, Mister Gamp, and Badiate. Hokioi led into the • straight from Bennaneo, Gardant, Thorndale, Asleep, and Sayanora.
