NELSON NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

NELSON, 16th March. The annual meeting, of the Nelson Rugby Union'was held on Monday evening. The annual report showed that the finances were in a very satisfactory condition. The expenditure on school football had been justified by very satisfactory results. The election of officers for the ensuing season resulted:—President, Mr. W. E. Frank; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. Hogg and E. J. Kennedy; secretary, Mr. F. Lock; treasurer, Mr. E. J. Pahl; selectors: senior, Messrs. Blencoe, Chapman, and G. Bennett; junior, Messrs. J. Ross, A. G. Betts, and H. Rowe. Eulogistic references were made to the work done by the retiring president, Mr. K. Boon, and the secretary, Mr. F. Hare, both of whom were elected life members. During a discussion on reorganisation with a view to bettering the conditions and raising the standard of country football, the claims of the Pirate Club (Wakefield) to put a: senior team in the field this season' were put forward by Dr. Casselburg. Mr. C. M. Ward, representing the Waimea Football Club (Richmond and district), stated that that club had 23 years' standing, had large assets, two grounds, and was in "a central town. It would be weakened if the Pirates Club had a senior team, and he suggested a round-table conference on the matter. This was agreed to, and will be held shortly. A public meeting at Richmond on Monday agreed that the council should take the necessary steps to acquire the war memorial building and the Richmond library buildings, with.the land on which they stand, as offered to the council by the committee of the library and the board of the V.M.C.A.

Miss England, who for some years has, with Mrs. M'Kee-Wright, managed the Manuka street private hospital, and is now retiring from active duties, has been the recipient of a presentation from'the Nelson Trained Nurses' Association. The Nelson Golf Club will open the season on Saturday with a mixed foursomes flag match. The links are in excellent order, but would be bettered by a good rain.
