MR. MITCHELL NOT STANDING

Mr. G. Mitchell, who some months ago indicated that he would probably become a candidate for the office of Mayor in the event of Mr. Norwood deciding not to/ recontest the seat, lias now announced that as an amicable settlement has been reached whereby the present Mayor, after two years of splendid service to the city, has voluntarily decided to stand down, he does not think it would be in the interests of citizens that the position should be again complicated*

Therefore, much as he would liko to comply with the request made by two deputations that he should be a candidate, he felt it his duty under all the circumstances not to.do so on this occasion. "I wish to thank most sincerely," said Mr. Mitchell, "those ladies and gentlemen who have requested me to staad and who have so freely offered their services to secure my return, and promise that I will be a candidate for the position of Mayor on the first suitable occasion. In the meantime. I will offer my services for the .CitVj Council and the Harbour Boards
