CROWDS COME TO BLOWS
SHANGHAI, 12th March,
In anticipation of demonstrations in connection with the anniversary celebration of the death of Sun Vat Son, the Father of the revolution, special precautions were taken, but rain damped the ardour of the participants. The day was marked by few"incidents. The expected general strike failed to materialise.
Five hundred armed Shantungese attempted to enter the International Settlement, but were frustrated by the British guards. Two hundred British troops ready for action rushed up, and the Shantungese, realising the futility of attempting to force a passage, retired. ...
In the French section a dispute took place between the extreme and moderate sections of the Kuomintang. Shots were fired, and two were wounded. French police intervened and restored order.
Kuomintang followers were busy distributing handbills inciting the populace against the foreigners. Huge crowds collected, which the police with difficulty dispersed.
