LIFT FATALITY
NEGLECT BY DECEASED

CHEISTCHUECH, 12th March. "The accident was due to deceased's omission to make use of the safety props provided for the lift on which ho was working, the necessity for which he was aware of." This was the verdict returned by Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., Coronor, yesterday afternoon, after hearing evidenco at the inquest on the late John Terrence Thompson, who was killed on Monday last while operating a .lift, in the /•.'Lyttelton Times" Company's store in Gloucester street.
Dr. A. J. Orchard gave evidence to the effect that Thompson had died of a fractured skull caused throueh beine struck by a lift. ' ■
Ernest Hargrave, machinery inspector gavo evidence to. show that the accident had been caused by Thompson failing to put in the props. The lift had been tested once that day and performed without a hitch.
