TRAFFIC IN OPIUM
SEAMAN FINED £50 (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. A fine of £50, in default three months' imprisonment, for being found in possession of opium in. a form suitable for smoking, was imposed on Samuel Herbert Daly, a seaman on the Ulimaroa, in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Reginald Albert Dutton was fined £.5, with costs, for a similar offence. Chief-Detective' Cummins said .the police had recently found that opium supplies in Auckland greatly increased after oach visit of the Ulimaroa. Three tins had been brought ashore by Daly, and two were given to Dutton. The tins were bought for £2 10s in Australia, and were being freely distributed among the Chinese in the city for £12 or £13. Daly had declined to reveal from whom the purchase was made in Australia.
