MERRETT MURDER CHARGE

LONDON, Bth February.
In the trial of the New Zealander, John Donald Merrett, aged 19, on a charge of murdering his mother, Mrs. Bertha Merrett, on 17th March, .1926, by shooting her in her flat at Edinburgh, the jury returned a verdict that the charge of murder was not proven. The accused was found guilty of forging cheques and was sentenced to a year's imprisonment. • '
Lord Alness, in summing up, pointed out that the deceased's depositions were not taken. The precision desirable in a murder trial was entirely lacking.
