COURTENAY PLACE

SUBWAY TO REDUCE

DANGER

CONVENIENCES TO BE BUILT

The City Council some months ago decided, upon the recommendation of the Tramways Committee, to purchase, under the Public "Works Act, two properties in Courtenay place, for the purpose of erecting tramway . ticket and administration offices, waiting rooms, and conveniences for both sexes at this very busy point, but as a purchase was involved it was considered wise not" to make the plan known > for the time being.

The general outline of the scheme have now, however, been announced by the Mayor. The properties are those of Mrs. Alice Merry and of Mrs. Margaret Powley, and are within a few yards of the corner of Clyde quay square. I Both at present carry old wooden buildings, and it was this fact that prompted the decision, for, within a year or two no doubt rebuilding would have been commenced and a good buy, having in view the particular requirements of the council, would have been an expensive buy "indeed. The land -was a frontage of 60 feet ana a depth of 102 feet. ' ■

Courtenay place is the most dangerous area in the city for the pedestrian—arid therefore for the motorist—and to overcome this danger in some respect it is proposed to construct a subway from the footpath in front of the rest room under the roadway to the tramway platform. As yet details have not been drawn up, dimensions, grades,, etc., but there is no doubt that by many elderly people and to women with children to look after a safe means of getting to and from cars will be regarded as a godsend. Several years ago the council adopted a plan for the rearrangement of the tramway island, involving also a rearrangement of traffic lines, but nothing further has been done in the matter, and no doubt "the details of the subway will depend upon the major plan.
