Although Institute were without the services of Banks, Bilby and Massey for their match with" Wellington on No. 1 wicket at •■the Basin Reserve, they succeeded in compiling a big score of 303. Foley and Burt, the opening pair, made a good start, the first-named carrying on until he had compiled 85 runs. His display was sound and forcing, and on numerous occasions he sent the' leather to the boundary. Prince, Malcolm, and Ward gave useful assistance to Foley, and after Foley's dismissal Ward and Baumber provided more bright play. The former was run out when he had scored 38, but Baumber was not easily disposed of, carrying on until the" last man wjis at the crease. Calvert and Rogers gave some help to Baumber, who was finally beaten when his total was 64. Baumber batted in aggressive style. The innings "closed for 303. Hiddleston, Plant, and O'Connor were the most successful bowlers for Wellington, who, before stumps were drawn, had commenced their reply with the bat, putting on eight runs without loss. Massey's absence from the Institute team was due to the fact that he has been transferred to Marlborough. He will not be available again this season. Details:— INSTITUTE. First Innings.
