(From Our Own Correspondent)

' „„ NELSON, 4th Feb. -I uo'Hospital Board met on. "Wednesday, Mr. G. M. Rout presiding. The resignation of Dr. de Clive Lowe, house surgeon, was received with regret. During the month 97 patients were admitted and 51 discharged, leaving 73 in the institution. At the Motueka Cottage Hospital nine patients were admitted, seven discharged, and two remained. Eleven families received assistance from the funds. The cost of alterations and additions at the Motueka Cottage Hospital total £1130. The chairman read a comprehensive statement regarding the probable deficit of £.7000 at the end of the financial year. It showed that the ratepayers would have to find only half the amount, as the Government subsidy would be £3500. The ratepayers would thus pay altogether only £17,000 —being half the original loan of £27----000 (£13,500), plus the £3500—towards the capital cost of the hospital, £70,000. On the recent visit of the Director-General of Health to Nelson opportunity had been taken to place the position before him, and he had expressed, himself satisfied that in view of the magnitude of the task undertaken the board and the ratepayers could congratulate themselves on the result achieved for the expenditure entailed.

The Customs duties collected in Nelson in January amounted to £3469 los 3d, and beer duty £1045 8s 4d. The amounts for January last year were £.3050 6s Sd and £1094 7s Id respectively.

The Waimea County Council resolved as follows, regarding an increased subsidy for the reconstruction of the Motuelca bridge:—"That the Main Highways Board be again informed that the council-- has already contributed £10,173 towards the construction of tlie bridge. The amount required to complete the bridge is £13,000, and the amount that is availavle out of county funds is only £2000, therefore the council respectfully urges that the Highways Board be asked to find the balance of the money."
