FIGURES FOR 1&26
TEEE POPEkATIOST W<3REA&E
The actual gain ,'in the population of the Dominion through migration during the year ended 31st December, 1926, amounted to: 12,414 persons, which is 388 fewer, than in- 1925....../
During 1926, 97,265' persons (including crews of vessels) arrived in.New Zealand from overseas, compared with a total of 90,069 during 1925. Excluding crews, the number of ■ arrivals was 45,685, as against 41,846 for the previous year. The figure for 1926, which represents an increase of 3839 over that of 1925, has been exceeded only once, in- 1863, during'which year 45,730 persons arrived in the country. i Immigrants intending permanent residence accounted for 17,868 of the arrivals— an increase of 2164 over the 1925 total. Tha number of tourists also shows a considerable increase, the figures being 9509 and 7898 for 1926 and 1925 respectively. The remainder of the arrivals was mjjde up as follows, the corresponding figures for the previous year being shown 'in parentneses for purposes of comparison: Permanent residents returning after a temporary absence, 14,375 (14,024); persons on business, 1993 (2241); theatrical, sporting, etc., 994 (1193); others,, officials of foreign Governments, etc., 343 (194); persons, in transit, 533 (520), and not stated, 70 (72). Including crews, departures during' 1926, numbered 84,851, as against the previous year's total of 77,267. Excluding crews the number was 33,824, an increase of 4652 over the total for 1925. Of the departures, some 2581 were permanent residents of New Zealand, who stated their intention of leaving the country permanently, compared with a total of 1946 for tho previous year. The remainder consisted of permanent residents departing temporarily* 15,156, and temporary residents departing, 16.065. The corresponding figures for 1925 were 13,758 and 13,462 respectively. .
The main classes of migrants, which represent the permanent additions and losses to the Dominion's population, are worthy of'special mention. Whereas 17,868 persons arrived in. New Zealand with the stated intention of taking up permanont residence, only 2581 permanent residents left to take up residence elsewhere. As formerly this movement in population was mainly confind to the Empire. There were only 756_ foreign nationals included in the new immigrants, compared with 894 in 1925. The decrease is mainly accounted for by the, reduced number of Italian subjects who arrived during 1926, the figures being 88 and 262 respectively. Jugo-Slav nationals, on the other hand, show an increase of 23 over 1925.
-. There was a considerable decrease in the_ numb,er of race alien immigrants during 1926, compare 1 with the previous year, the numbers being 139 and 191 respectively.
