AMUSEMENT PARK
TURNED DOWN BY COUNCIL
The Reserves Committee does not consider it advisable to establish Coney Island and such like attractions at Day's Bay, and so last evening recommended that the council should decline permission for the setting up of an amusement park at the bay, the estimated cost of which was stated at £6000. The committee also advised against the giving of permission for the erection of a circular wave at Williams Park, Day's Bay.
In reply to Councillor H. D. Bennett, Councillor W. J. Thompson, chairman of the Reserves Committee, said that the proposal was that the cost of establishing the amusement park.should be borne by the council. Councillor Bennett remarked that if private enterprise was willing to spend £6000 in that direction the matter should be given very serious consideration.
With that view the Mayor agreed, for if private enterprise was willing to spend such an amount it was proof that a very great number of people were expected to avail themselves of the park. The council certainly did not want to spend £6000, but the other proposition should be looked into.
Councillor Thompson said that the communication received by his committee on the matter did suggest that in the event of the council being unwilling to embark upon the scheme the matter might be taken up by a private company, a helter-skelter; dodgems, and side-shows being suggested. The committee vrould not'favour the scheme in any case, on account of the lack of space. Councillors Wright "and W. H. Bennett also opposed the scheme on account of the lack of space. The only people that would benefit, said Councillor W. H. Bennett, ■would be the ferry company, and as a matter of fact all the people that could now be accommodated were now visiting the bay.
The recommendation was adopted.
