BETTING AND BRITISH TAX

(Received 24th January, 10 a.m.) )\ LONDON, 23rd January. : Lawful betting, since the tax was introduced has decreased 75 pei\ cent., compared with the previous year, according to a report of the committee of the Tur.f Guardian Society, which asserts that their lost business has been driven underground either in illegal ready-money betting or in enriching shady bookmakers and commission agents betting secretly and not paying the tax. The committe hold that the ta: has broken down.
