EX-OFFICER'S DEATH

VERDICT OF SUICIDE,

An inquest concerning Ilia death of Cecil William Swinford, aged 29, who w«h found dead in his room at 0, Kensington street, on Tuesday afternoon, with a gunshot wound in his throat, and a doublebarrelled gun, one chamber of which waa discharged, lying alongside him, wan held before Mr. J. W. Ellison, J.P., Coroner, yesterday. Evidence was given that Swinford, who was of a quiet, reserved disposition, had given no indication that he was likely to take his life. He was of strictly Kober habits, and had been in New Zealand about two years. So far as was known, he was an ex-Imperial Army officer, and had no relatives in the Dominion. When seen not long before the tragedy, ho was in his usual health and spirits.

A verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was returned.
