TURNED DOWN
INVITATION TO R. A. ROSE,
In giving his consent recently to run at a sports meeting in Poverty Tay on 3rd January, R. A. Rose, the New Zealand amateur champion distance runner, was under the imprcssio that the control of the meeting was in amateuj hands. It transpires, however, that the sports are being conducted by a professional'body, and Rose, of course, has withdrawn his consent, having no desire whatever, to lose his amateur status. His decision to go -to Poverty Bay was made in all good faith, ;mainly in the hope that he would be able by his appearance to give the amateur sport a helping hand. The object would not be fulfilled by competing at the meeting mentioned, but it is^ likely that Rose will appear at an amateur sports gathering in Poverty; Bay; about tSe middle-of January
