FRENCH FIFTEEN DEFEATED

The brilliant defeat of a selected French fifteen by 13 points to 9 marked the resumption of tho Maoris' French tour. Tho attendance was 12,000. the weather was fine, and the ground dry. Franco failed to tako advantage of a free-kick against the Maoris for obstruction. The Maoris resumed their attack, and Phillips dropped a brilliant goal.' Villa replied with a try, which was unconverted. Jaurreguy, who was a pillar of strength, narrowly missed putting tho Frenchmen ahead. Pelham added another unconverted try. Tho Maoris' defence withstood a vigorous attack, and.they were leading at halftime by 7 points to 3: Jaurreguy ran brilliantly, but was pulled down, and a general weakness in the French defence enabled Falwasser to score a try after n brilliant run, which Jaurroguy almost stopped. The tourists again attacked; and despite Dumanoirs's fine defence, added their third converted try, after strong and fast running, and speedy breaking up. Phillips was the outstanding player. Franco's best were Jaurreguy, Dumanoir, and Graeict. Tho French team wore; —Chesnoau, Villa, Graeict, Baillete, Jaurreguy, Dumanoir, Bador, Ribcie, Piqueral, Etcherbery, Cassayot, Camel, Montade, Salagnac, Soyrou. Maoris:—Phillips, Falwasscr, Pelham, Barclay, Mote, Wineera, Bell, Lowe, Dennis, Wilson, Rika, Manihera, Robinson, S. Gemmill. Only fourteen names are mentioned.
