FOR THE SAILORS

(Te ts* editor.) Sir,—The Social Committee of the Wellington Branch of the British, Sailors' So. ciety desires to appeal through the columns of your valuable paper to the residents of Wellington City and district who are sympathetic with the good work carried on in our midst by this and kindred societies for funds or gifts to enable the officials to cater for entertainment and outings for sailors who will be in port during the Christmas and New Year festive season. All those connected Avith the work oi the British Sailors' Society give their services voluntarily, not one of them drawing anything as remuneration for the sacrifice of their time, in fact, each one donates some portion of their earnings weekly to help in providing for the entertainment of their guests, but this, although a great holp, is not sufficient to en- j able them to carry out the programme they desire to do in the interests of the men of the Navy and Mercantile Marine who did so much for us during the late Great War. i Our debt as a nation can never bo repaid to these men in full, but some slight appreciation can be shown by the provision of funds to enable the society to entertain the sailors with innocent _ amussment and healthy recreation during the time they are ashore, which will be appreciated by those on whose behalf wa are banded together. If you will kindly publish this appeal I feel sure some persons who can afford it will gladly assist i us in our efforts. —I am, etc., B. PADMAN, Hon. Secretary. 15, Carringtou street.
