SWIMMING CARNIVAL

RIX-TROTT'S FAST .00 YARDS

SOME CLOSE -FINISHES.

The swimming carnival at Te Aro Baths/ organised by the Wellington Centre on Saturday, deserved a better attendance, as the programme was an excelleiu one, and the handicapping so good that there were close finishes to nearly all races. Though the weather was calm and sunny, the water was still too cold to allow of late events, and largely for this reason a water polo contest was abandoned. . Starting at 2.30 p.m., nearly a score o. events followed in rapid succession, ending at 4.30 p.m., and, besides numerous well-contested races, spectators were treated to spectacular high diving by W. Hicks and others, which included somersault, jack-knife, roll, double-dive, backsomergault, "hunch," y and many other, forms of fancy and comedy diving, the ''Charlie Chaplin, splash" cominc. in tlie latter category. Some of the ladies dived very neatly, and the work in the boys' dive was good, but neither were as comfortable as the men in diving from the high board. The time put up by Eix-Trott, a Nelson acquisition, of 60sec for the 100 yards in-ter-club final has not been equalled fov some years in Wellingtd-. Entries did not quite come up to expectations, but there were good fields ia most of the events, and the times through-, out were creditable for so early in the season. A great deal of fun was caused by the novelties "staged." Two gladiators in punts, navigated by blindfold crews of one, fought a moist but deadly battle with mops. Just as the warriors were getting to flops in earnest, the crews lost their bearings, and the craft drifted apart, the opponents paddling furiously though ineffectually with their weapons, and when they did get within range again, one of them put tho gunwales under by too much footwork, and their put filled and sank.' Their attempt to sink the victor from the water was a valiant effort doomed to failure. Balloon races, each competitor to blow a balloon ahead of him, resulted inthe most erratic of courses, one participant never getting away from the starting end. Following are the results:— 50 Yards First-class Inter-club Handicap.— Tlrst heat: M'lvor (Wellington), scr, 1; Hill (Lyall Bay), .sec, 2; MurreU (Maranul), scr, 3; time, 3_sec.
