DECLINE IN HAWKES BAY DAIRY, EXPORTS

Last season (Writes iho Hawkcs Bay "Herald" of 2nd December) was ono of the worst experienced by • the dairy Industry In Hawkes Bay for many years, but If export or grading figures can give any indication it might be said that this season is even worso than last. That Is hardly the case, however, it being nowhere as dry as twelve months ago, although lt has been bad enough. The only logical reason lt seems possible to advance for the decline In the dairy produco output is that tho district Is still feeling; the ollect of the dry 1925-26 season. Feed then was very scarce, and the producers were compelled to disposo of all the stock they could not carry. Starvation claimed many head of stock, and many were sent away to other districts. The result Is that the district this season has not the same producing power as last, and in consequence export figures show a .decline. Butter received Into the grading stores at Port AhurSri during November numbered 7200 boxes, which is 522 boxes less than in November last year. It Is a failing off that ia not confined to last

month alone, but has boon notlccablo every month since the season opened. The quantity received for grading brought the number of boxes of butter in store on 30th November up to 11,010, but that large quantity is now being reduced. Some 5000 boxes or butter aro boing shipped to the Old Country by tho Buahlno at present loading In tho roadstead. A further 4000 boxes will leave tho stores within the next few days, tlie Turaklna taking. 2000 boxes for West of England ports, and the Tainul 2000 boxes for London. As to cheese, £25 crates wero received for grading, an increase of 30 crates on 1925. That number mado a to'.al of 203 crates in store on 30th November, but tn-day will find 244 crates taken' aboard tho I'ort Hobart en route to the Old Country.
