THE AUCKLAND WEIGHTS

FLATTERING* HANDICAPS,

Yesterday the weights for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap made their appearance, and already enthusiasts are expressing their likes and dislikes. In the Cup.Mr. F. J.-.M'Manemin ha. framed what can be called a flattering handicap, but what_ is more satisfactory is the manner in which he has kept the weight off the good horses. Rapine, who at Riccarton showed that he is as well as ever he has been, is naturally top weight, his impost 9.9 being lib more than he scored with last year. Count Cavour carried 8.13, and was beaten by a head, and this year he has 9.5. According to the critics last year the Count was unlucky to be beaten. Te Monanui was third with 8.7, and this year he has 9.1. Rapine thus meets the pair on 51b and 71b better terms. Te Kara has a good horse's weight at 9.0, and it is understood he is quickly coming back to his best. Star Stranger is well in at 9.2 through Rapine, for the last time they were handicapped in Australia Star Stranger was asked to give Rapine 21b. Neither ran. Grand Knight will run in the Railway Handicap, possibly, and it is unlikejy that either Beacon Light or Degage will be at Ellerslie. Mask at 8.0 is a possibility, and Eden Hall, 7.12, and Mandane, 7.8, should be well in the picture, for they have ideal imposts for this type of race. Limerick can be disregarded, and Star Ranger has all he is entitled to. Diogenes, 7.3, and Battlement, 7.2, will have plenty of friends, but in their cases capable riders will be the greatest need, although probably T. Green will be secur. Ed for Battlement. Considering Piuthair won the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton, she appeal's one of the picks of the handicap at 7.1, and her stablemate, Clarinda, is not by any means out of it, or unduly burdened with the minimum. More than half the field are on the 7.0 mark, and of them only Nippy and Clarinda appeal. With the good horses not overburdened the tasks of the lightweight brigade is not going to be easy. A likely six at present may be Rapine, Te Kara, Mask, Mandane, Diogenes, and Battlement. No doubt the Railway Handicap will again have to be divided this year, and at the moment it seems hopeless attempting an analysis. Reremoana and Grand Knight have eajned the premier" position, which they should not disgrace. Lady Cavendish, Shirley, Limited, Licinius, and Ruffles, all appear nicely placed, whilst amongst the 42 on the 7.0 mark one could frame <juite a useful handicap with an. appreciable ma-gin in tho weights.
